What is Fraxel®?
The Fraxel® laser system uses advanced light technology, fractional resurfacing, to stimulate collagen production in the top layers of the skin. This process of skin resurfacing can improve wrinkles, diminish scars from surgery or acne, eliminate pigmentation, shrink pores and remove precancerous lesions. The laser energy works with your bodies natural cell cycle and stimulates collagen below the skin’s surface.
What Are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks, one of the common areas treated with a Fraxel laser, are discolored scars seen on the skin which form from damage to the dermis layer. This damage occurs when there is tearing of the deeper skin layers, leaving many people feeling very subconscious. The color of the stretch marks depends on one’s skin type and the overall age of the scar. These colors can appear brown, white, or red. They often begin red, and as time passes, they lose their pigmentation completely, leaving them brown.
Causes of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks generally occur when there is a rapid stretching of the skin in a short period of time. They most commonly appear on the abdomen, breasts, upper arms, thighs, hips, and buttocks and are caused by:
- Weight Gain
- Growth Spurts
- Abuse of Drugs
- Muscle Building
- Hormonal Fluctuations
Laser Stretch Mark Removal
Fraxel laser treatments have been found to improve white or brown stretch marks. Many of our patients, after 4-5 treatments see dramatic improvement to their problem areas, leaving them more confident in their own skin. Fraxel laser has the ability to stimulate the pigment-producing melanin of your skin. This ultimately darkens your skin, leaving your existing stretch marks less visible.

Before and After Fraxel®
Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment
Patients can receive Fraxel laser treatment in the comfort of our office. We topically numb each patient for 60-90 minutes prior to performing the laser treatment. Then, Dr. Evans will move the handpiece across the treatment area. This will destroy the damaged skin cells and promote the development of healthy cells. The laser light will reach the inner layers of skin without affecting the surrounding skin. The length of treatment will depend on the area being treated therefore it can take anywhere from 10-40 minutes.
Depending on the patient's preference and the treatment area multiple sessions can be recommended. Studies suggest that effective treatment takes from 3 to 5 sessions and are spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart.
Fraxel® Treatment Side Effects
Common side effects can last from several days to a couple of weeks, depending upon the aggressiveness of the treatment. Though these side effects are rare, Dr. Evans will discuss the following during your consultation visit.
- Acne Flareup
- Prolonged Redness
Results of Fraxel® Laser Treatment
Fraxel laser treatment has a little downtime and patients can resume daily activities almost immediately after treatment. However, patients should expect 5-7 days of healing time for their skin to return to a normal state. Optimal results typically happen in 2 to 3 months, but the skin continues to improve for about a year. It is important to protect the treated area from the sun after the procedure with a proper moisturizer and SPF. Our care team will go over the best-recommended products for use after treatment.
